Business Challenge
Data Lync’s client, a large healthcare services organization, wanted to transition its production and backup workloads from its legacy VMWare environment. Without a large, in-house IT department, the client needed a solution that was simple to manage, ultra-reliable and cost-effective.
Australian law mandates that healthcare data must remain in Australia; this, together with budget considerations, ruled out a pure cloud solution. In addition, the client needed a scalable solution to accommodate their evolving needs. To satisfy these objectives, Data Lync turned to Nutanix. This would enable the client to reap all the advantages of a hyperconverged platform that consolidates storage, server, virtualization, and networking resources, while keeping sensitive patient information compliantly stored on-premise.
As part of the client engagement, Data Lync provides backup and disaster recovery services, so choosing the optimal Nutanix backup solution was a critical decision.
Solution
While the client had been using Veeam for backup in its VMWare environment, Data Lync wanted a backup and recovery solution that was tightly integrated with Nutanix. After evaluating several alternatives, HYCU emerged as the clear winner, offering the best combination of Nutanix integration, simplicity and performance.
“We wanted to make backup and disaster recovery as simple as possible for the customer. HYCU fits that bill,” says Chris Eather, Director of Infrastructure & Operations at Data Lync.
HYCU also offered a level of Nutanix integration that is unmatched.
“The fact that HYCU was developed to be tightly integrated with Nutanix AHV and the Nutanix user experience is a big plus,” Eather says.
Another big plus is HYCU’s ability to perform backups from a replica.
This is an important advantage, given the limited availability of very high-speed connectivity in Australia.
“Being able to back up from a replica really helps with performance for noncritical machines,” Eather explains. “Having the option to back up some machines from the source and others from the replica copy gives us a level flexibility we lacked before HYCU.”
Based on the success of their HYCU experience, Data Lync is now looking to expand the use of Nutanix and HYCU to other clients seeking a greater flexibility and a simple, reliable backup and recovery solution.
Benefits
Super Speed and Performance
With HYCU, backup and restore times are significantly faster. Backup from source have gone from hours to a few minutes. “And backups from replicas are incredibly quick, just a few seconds,” Eather says. “Also, we’ve seen no impact on machine performance. This is a big improvement over the client’s old environment where backups sometimes impacted production workloads.”
Rock-solid Reliability
HCYU has proven extremely reliable and simple to manage. “It just works,” Eather says. “With most other products, there are always things you have to check. But not with HYCU.”
Cost Avoidance
The combination of Nutanix and HYCU enables Data Lync clients to avoid costly licenses, while providing failover with an active/active service. “We can offer our clients a high level of resilience at a price point that wasn’t previously achievable,” Eather explains. “They can have a file server, domain controller and other resources running on the DR side all the time, ready to go, allowing nearly instantaneous recovery. This reserve capacity is always there, whereas with cloud-based DR, you must pay for what you use.”
